Whether you're filling up your car or ordering heating oil for winter, you've probably noticed fuel prices moving in 2026. We tracked daily fuel prices in Luxembourg from January 1 to September 26, 2026, and the trend is clear.
The big picture
All four fuels ended the period well above where they started (prices in € per litre, VAT included):
- Super 98: from €1.54 to about €2.12 (+38%)
- Super 95: from €1.41 to €1.89 (+34%)
- Diesel: from €1.39 to about €2.10 (+51%)
- Heating oil: from €0.82 to €1.58 (+93%)
Heating oil saw the steepest rise, almost doubling in price over nine months.
Prices increased in March after the Iran conflict:
Prices were fairly stable through January and February. In March, after the Iran conflict began, prices increased quickly across all fuels. Diesel and heating oil reacted most strongly, both peaking in early April, with diesel reaching roughly €2.18 per litre.
A summer breather, then another climb
After the spring peak, prices eased. Heating oil fell to around €1.05 in late June, and diesel dropped to about €1.59 in early July, close to petrol levels. But the relief was short-lived. From July onward, all four fuels climbed again, with a noticeable step up in early September.
Diesel now costs about as much as Super 98
Diesel started the year as the cheapest of the road fuels, level with Super 95. By late September it had caught up with Super 98, at roughly €2.10 per litre. That matters for anyone who chose a diesel vehicle for lower running costs.
